This study aims to explore the intricate relationship between motivation and cognitive engagement in the online environment, with a particular focus on vocabulary learning strategies. To capture the event-based motivation status and learning strategies, experience sampling methodology is used to identify the changing pattern of motivation and investigate the corresponding cognitive engagement throughout the learning periods. We employed linear growth models to analyze the longitudinal relationship between the motivation and vocabulary learning strategies using SAS. Activation strategies and consolidation strategies were used more often as the time goes by. Motivation plays an important role in the use of all strategies.
