Principles emerging from literature about surveying young school-aged children guided development of the Pivot F-3 Student Perception Survey, designed for gathering feedback on teaching practice from children in Foundation through Year Three. The F-3 consists of ten simply-phrased questions answered on a three-point scale. In March 2020, a pilot in seven Australian schools obtained 433 responses across 29 classrooms. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses found evidence of internal consistency, content validity, and structural validity. Evidence of convergent validity was mixed. Overall, this pilot study provides initial evidence of construct validity for the F-3 survey. This study contributes to the knowledge base about obtaining valid data from surveys of 5- to 8-year-olds in school settings, illustrating principles for developmentally-appropriate instrument design.
