This qualitative, narrative inquiry examines the impact of specific, highly visible instances of police violence against African Americans on middle and high school educators and their students located in (or in proximity to) four urban cities: the cities of Ferguson, Missouri (the police killing of Michael Brown); Baltimore, Maryland (the police killing of Freddie Gray); Cleveland, Ohio (the police killing of Tamir Rice); and New York; New York (the police killing of Eric Garner). As instances of unjustified police violence continue to plague communities and society, an understanding of how educators, as valuable members of our communities, experience police violence will be useful in future research and reform efforts surrounding this pervasive issue.
