We can learn a great deal from an examination of the leadership and vision of the Puerto Rican educators who founded the first bilingual/multicultural school in New York City, P.S. 25. Its example demonstrates how committed leadership can lead to a successful school and give it staying power. The objective of this paper is to interrogate how the school leaders, teachers, parents and students in the first bilingual school in New York City, P.S. 25, envisioned and created a new educational paradigm for the students of the South Bronx in the 1960s and 1970s.
The history of P.S. 25 provides lessons for those committed to the education of Latinx and newcomer students as well as bilingual subjects in today’s schools.
