Life purpose is a vision of our ideal self that inspires goals. Previous research was not based on a theoretical foundation and as a result, the observed relationships are difficult to interpret. This study adapted an existing framework and used SEM to assess the resulting model. Responses from 458 undergraduates measured cognitive and emotional components of motivation, life purpose, and academic and civic engagement. The model fit the data, supporting the hypothesized relationships. Life purpose is predicted by cognitive and emotional elements and predicts important outcomes. The model could serve as a foundation for future life purpose research by predicting relationships and providing a context to interpret the results of empirical studies. Implications for future research are discussed.
