"Seems Like We're Being Watched": Academic Advisors, Technology-Based Advising Tools, and Surveillance

Mon, April 12, 11:10am to 12:10pm EDT (11:10am to 12:10pm EDT), Division J, Division J - Section 2b Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

In efforts to continue to improve student outcomes, in the midst of declining resources and increased accountability, several colleges and universities are considering or have implemented technology-mediated advising tools (Kalamkarian & Karp, 2017). As such, the purpose of this paper was to understand the impact of technology-based advising tools on academic advisors. With the increased reliance on technology-based advising tools to help address low persistence and completion rates (Kalamkarian & Karp, 2017), understanding how technology-based advising tools are understood and experienced by academic advisors is critical because ultimately advisor working conditions translate into the learning conditions of students.
