While educators are quickly developing tools and strategies for bringing AI into classrooms, less attention is being paid to the numerous ethical issues that surround AI systems. This study describes two online summer camps for secondary students centered on the goal of supporting youth in becoming ethical creators, consumers and critics of AI systems. Our curriculum features original short stories with youth protagonists at the center of AI ethical dilemmas and design challenges in which we ask students to express their stance on an AI ethics dilemma. We explore the research question, “How do youth participating in a virtual AI camp understand and value AI ethical issues?” Findings highlight students’ nuanced, strongly felt, and contextualized views concerning AI ethics.
