Based on studies of summer learning loss, it is predicted there will be large academic disparities in math and reading proficiency and growth for students returning to school this fall. Given the focus of distance learning effects due to COVID-19 on these cognitive measures, little will be known about the impact on noncognitive and health variables. Using survey data from 960 students from grade 5 (493 from the 2019 cohort and 467 from the 2020 cohort), the effects of distance learning on the amount of sleep, exercise, gaming hours, as well as on school climate, teacher/school support, school safety, and students’ relationships with their teachers were analyzed. Significant differences were found between cohorts with small to moderate effect sizes.
