Research was conducted on the effectiveness of an online, self-paced, competency-based education program of micro-credentials that are designed for teachers working in underserved rural communities. Each micro-credential is based on recommended strategies from the Institute of Education Sciences What Works Clearinghouse practice guides. To investigate the efficacy of two of the program’s micro-credentials, teacher participants were randomly assigned to one of two micro-credentials on elementary mathematics, one on word problems and the other on fractions. The participants (n = 573) completed the pre-post assessments for each course. Results showed that both teacher micro-credential courses were effective in increasing learners’ knowledge of evidence-based practices. We suggest the online micro-credential program presents an accessible and affordable means for teacher professional development.
