"I Gave the Foot": Building Solidarity for Teacher Learning in Lesson Study

Abstract

Despite frequent findings demonstrating the positive impact of Lesson Study for teacher learning in the US and in Chile, there is concern over the break-down in implementation. This paper explores teacher learning through lesson study showing how this breakdown may be experienced among teachers. Additionally, this paper will show how members of the professional learning community performed acts of solidarity for creating new knowledge and overcoming barriers. I used the phrase “give the foot” which was the phrase used by the teacher to explain how he provided opportunity to speak honestly so that the community could co-construct knowledge together.
