Culturally responsive, equity-based, anti-bias pedagogical approaches complement integrative social studies approaches. However, many PSTs enter preparatory programs with a lukewarm appreciation of social studies and it is well-documented that teaching social studies in the early years is often eliminated within the curriculum and replaced with literacy and math instruction (Kalaidis, 2013). This exploratory case study examines pre-service teachers’ (PSTs) how PSTs represent culturally responsive equity-based pedagogical practices within their social studies culminating lesson plans. Findings suggest the use of an equity-based analysis tool may promote PSTs culturally relevant instructional practices.
