Design-Based Research on Flipping the Classrooms in Social Humanities Education

Mon, April 12, 4:30 to 5:30pm EDT (4:30 to 5:30pm EDT), Division C, Division C - Section 3b: Technology-Based Environments Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

FIBER (Flipped Issue-Based Enquiry Ride) is a pedagogic framework for integrating the “flipped” strategy into issue-based enquiry learning in social humanities education. This proposed presentation aims to report on a piece of 2-cycle design-based research about implementing FIBER in the context of formal curriculum learning and teaching in Hong Kong. The study involved 9 teachers (from 9 different secondary schools at 3 different academic bands) and their Secondary-5 classes (with 610 students in total) in two consecutive school years. The findings not only shed light on how to design and implement articulated teacher facilitation acts when harnessing flipped learning in social humanities education, providing researchers and educators with empirical evidence for supporting a wider adoption of FIBER in formal schooling.
