This study analyzed whether status as a STEM major, impossibility mindset, last grades, hopeful grades, and expected grades in freshmen and transfer students enrolled in a mandatory probationary course could predict retention after one semester. The results indicated that after one semester, the students’ hopeful grades as well as an interaction of a STEM major by an impossibility mindset were able to significantly predict the retention of these students in the following semester. The study emphasizes the importance of maintaining retention in at-risk students by identifying key predictors for whether a student will be retained at their university in a short time framework.
