Although Black women are the fastest growing degree-granting recipients of higher education, academia is still a hostile environment for this population (Gonzalez & Harris, 2012). Employing a transformative philosophical foundation and Black feminist theoretical framework, this study describes and explains how Black women faculty employ “in the moment” emotional regulation as racial and gender microaggressions occur and their decisions to thrive in higher education. This study provides insights to the experiences of Black women in higher education and informs academic institutions with ways to support women of color faculty members throughout their careers in higher education.
