This paper presentation explores new frameworks for classroom observation practices in post-secondary contexts. The authors trace critical perspectives on the uses and misuses of evaluation protocols in relation to institutional policies and extant assessment research. Though divergent in their inquiry methods, the studies are linked by a core question: how can classroom observations be conducted in ways that mitigate surveillance structures and power imbalances while increasing participants’ safety and autonomy (Bell & Thompson, 2018). Both authors, responding to that prompt relative to their disciplinary perspectives, shares findings and emerging themes from their respective mixed-method research projects.
