Learning Loss and Family Barriers to Literacy During the Pandemic

Sun, April 11, 12:20 to 1:20pm EDT (12:20 to 1:20pm EDT), Division B, Division B Paper and Symposium Sessions

Abstract

Groene, with the IUE investigates barriers that parents of elementary school children with reading delays may experience when trying to assist their children with reading instruction online. This study is significant because of the number of students who will be affected by “learning loss” during this time of online instruction. The study hopes to find unseen barriers that may be attributed to culture and to uncover gaps educators may be missing. Seeing that the global pandemic is not likely to completely disappear for at least another year, and that a good percentage of Americans may decide not to be vaccinated (Pierre Verger & Eve Dubé, 2020), experts are predicting that the new hybrid instruction delivery method introduced during this time will be intertwined with education hereinafter (G., Biagi, F., Costa, P., Karpiński Z., Mazza, J, 2020). This study will add to the breadth of knowledge on how to support our families with literacy online in urban areas.
