Significant change is needed on social justice issues such as racial and gender equity; civil society groups and organizations often play a role in advocacy and activism and how such activities generate social change. We seek to understand how issues of power and structure affect advocacy and activism from the perspectives of those organizations that society and research have favored (formalized foundations and nonprofit organizations) and those society and research have largely ignored or silenced (social movement groups). Using qualitative data obtained through in-depth interviews, we seek to expand how advocacy is understood and practiced across the civil sector.
