The extended school closure due to COVID-19 pandemic has caused students, especially rural, low-income, elementary-aged African American children disastrous consequences. This research project investigates risk factors to these vulnerable students, perceived by rural community members, and their responses to mitigate the risks. Data will be collected from two rural southern Title I schools. Participants include two principals, eight teachers, five parents, five students, and five community members. Data sources come from (a) in-depth, semi-structured individual interviews, (b) documents and artifacts, and (c) reflective commentary journal. Findings from this project may assist rural school stakeholders in tackling future lengthy school closures.
