Collaborative Imagining: Academic Language Socialization for International Students through Disciplinary Language and Literacy Practices

Wed, April 7, 1:00 to 2:30pm EDT (1:00 to 2:30pm EDT), Division D, Division D Poster Sessions

Abstract

Relatively little attention has been given to the learning of professional discourse in a second language (L2) and how L2 students’ professional communicative repertoires differ from those of their domestic peers. This study addresses these gaps by undertaking a semester-long video-based ethnographic study that focuses on desk critiques or repetitive one-to-one instructional conversations about student design. Using multimodal interaction analysis, I analyze a series of conversations where people configured diverse semiotic resources to communicate their imaginative design ideas. Preliminary findings illustrate how L2 students re-used instructor’s words and representational practices with transformation to make visible their design to their instructors.
