When students consider the classroom a place of community, they benefit in a multitude of ways (Battistich et al., 1997; Meltzoff, 1994; Ratliff, 2019). When the global pandemic forced K-12 teachers to move their classrooms online, my collaborating teacher worried about her ability to build community, especially when there were still administrative pressures to continue rigorous academic content. In response, we have embarked on design-based research (DBR) to co-design and co-teach a writing workshop, with the goal of exploring teacher practices that foster meaningful interactions between student authors – and so support the development of an online elementary classroom community.
