Sampling plays an essential role in the research process including the generated inferences. Quantitative designs utilize a priori power analyses, however sampling schemes in qualitative designs are less prescriptive, with many using theoretical saturation. Sampling in mixed methods research is more complex, requiring sampling designs consistent with each strand of the mixed methods study and the integration of these components. Thus, the purpose of this methodological systematic review is to explore the sample sizes and schemes in mixed methods studies. This study will also examine mixed methods quality frameworks and their association to sample sizes and schemes.
