Research highlights the lack of diversity across different points of the teacher preparation process, starting with the low percentage of BIPOC students pursuing a baccalaureate degree (38%); only 25% non-white students enrolled in a teacher preparation program (USDOE, 2016). In their case study of a large state university that implements programs to recruit and retain underrepresented students to teacher education, Robinson, Paccione, & Rodriguez (2003) examined how that university recruited candidates into teacher education and supported them through program completion. Several years later, the national outlook on teachers of color has not improved. This study explored key experiences of current students and alumni of color and the role the University played in advancing their recruitment, preparation, retention, and graduation.
