Session Type: Symposium
Several decades of theory and research suggest that to promote educational equity, we must attend to the complex systems in which development and learning are embedded. Accordingly, full-service community schools (FSCSs) seek to increase educational opportunities for underserved students by focusing on different dimensions of their development and strategically collaborating with families and community partners to strengthen supports for and diminish barriers to these students’ school success. To advance understanding of the role of FSCSs in transforming educational experiences and outcomes for underserved students, this symposium highlights new research in the field. Four studies, using diverse conceptual and methodological approaches, are featured to illustrate the promise of these schools, as well as considerations for future practice and research.
