Session Type: Symposium
Seeking to address the pervasive racism of Brazilian public schooling, this symposium offers empirical research counterstories, comprised of investigations exploring new pedagogies and teaching practices in the pursuit of justice. In partnerships with Brazilian public schools, university-based teacher-education researchers explored pedagogical pathways for teaching in the pursuit of justice in Brazilian public schools. Individually, the studies examined pedagogical approaches and designs. Together, they offer a powerful counterstory to the segregation of schooling in Brazil and the Eurocentric epistemological orientation of teacher quality, antithetical to the (purported) public and democratic purposes of schooling. Throughout the papers, researchers critically attend to issues of racism, classism, ableism, and entangled forms of bigotry in teaching and teacher education, accepting responsibility for much-needed transformative actions.
