New Advances in the Preparation, Supervision, and Evaluation of Principals

Sat, April 10, 10:40am to 12:10pm EDT (10:40am to 12:10pm EDT), Division A, Division A - Section 5 Paper and Symposium Sessions

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Over the past decade, an important catalyst in school improvement efforts has often been overlooked: effective principal leadership. Principals have full responsibility for their schools and work closely with teachers and students daily. They make decisions about issues from those at an individual student level to the organization level, and they can make a meaningful difference in teachers’ and students’ lives. Also, the role of principals is more prominent under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the recent reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. In response, this symposium brings together three empirical papers and a conceptual essay that examine new approaches to preparing, supervising, and evaluating principals in order to identify ways to promote effective school leadership.
