Session Type: Symposium
Several recent studies have investigated how teaching candidates’ preparation experiences are related to their effectiveness as classroom teachers (e.g., Goldhaber, Krieg, & Theobald, 2020; Henry et al., 2014; Ronfeldt et al, 2020), but few large-scale studies have examined details of their experiences in courses and clinical placements or how these experiences shape key teacher outcomes. To address this shortcoming in the research literature, this symposium brings together five large-scale, quantitative studies of teacher preparation and novice teacher outcomes. Research that features larger groups of pre-service teachers, especially across multiple settings, can lead to better understanding of how the foci of methods and content courses, the characteristics of clinical placements, and the degree of preparation program coherence affect teacher development at scale.
