Instructional advances in self-regulated learning have been through the use of various learning technologies. These advances have included using different system features (e.g., pedagogical agents, scaffolds), detecting and modeling SRL processes and intervening accordingly, enticing learners to use features (e.g., planning through social interactions) that sustain motivation and affective states, and ubiquitous access allowing for learning across spatial and temporal boundaries. Despite these advances there are issues that remain unresolved including a deep understanding of what affordances (e.g., agency, tutoring, social interaction, ubiquitous access) provided by different learning technologies offer learners with different opportunities to accurately monitor and regulate their SRL processes during learning, reasoning, and problem-solving.
