Session Type: Symposium
While the concept of translanguaging has been advanced primarily in academic circles, there is a need for exploring how practitioners conceptualize and implement translanguaging in multilingual educational contexts. To this end, this symposium explores translanguaging through the perspectives of educators using ideological, social-justice, and pedagogical lenses. The first three papers employ the results of a large online survey (n=447) that asked educators how they define and implement translanguaging in their practices. The last two papers are situated in classroom settings and offer insights into how, and despite monoglossic constraints, teachers and students work together in creating bilingual and culturally sustaining instruction. The implications of the translanguaging landscape offered by this symposium will be of value for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers.
