Session Summary

Supporting College Success for Economically Marginalized Students Through Community Programming

Sun, April 11, 4:10 to 5:40pm EDT (4:10 to 5:40pm EDT), Division J, Division J - Section 2b Paper and Symposium Sessions

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

In response to the reality that higher education institutions are not supporting the degree attainment of economically marginalized students, community-based organizations across the country created college success programs (CSPs). Though CSPs serve tens of thousands of students annually, scholars have given little attention to their work. This symposium will highlight the work of CSPs by sharing results from several research projects. The first paper will describe the aims, methods, and outcomes of 11 CSPs across US; the second will review how students perceive their CSPs and the impact of those CSPs on their college experiences; the third will examine how the parent programming available through some CSPs affects parent involvement in their children’s postsecondary educations.
