Session Type: Symposium
As consensus grows around the importance of effective school leadership and the critical role principals play in school reform, school districts are focusing more on supporting and developing principals. This symposium examines the changing role of principal supervisors and the uses of supervision as a lever for developing and supporting principals as instructional leaders. The papers provide empirical data around the perspectives, practices, and challenges in the supervisor-principal relationship by asking such questions as: What conditions allow districts to transform the role of principal supervisors from compliance officers to principal coaches? What barriers limit the implementation of these new roles or the leadership development supports they are intended to provide to principals? And, does this change help develop effective principals?
