Sun, April 11, 10:40am to 12:10pm EDT (10:40am to 12:10pm EDT), Division C, Division C - Section 2b: Learning and Motivation in Social and Cultural Contexts Paper and Symposium Sessions

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

To best support student learning, teachers should engage in continuous learning throughout their careers, making their motivation for learning and its study crucial for any educational improvement. Although teacher motivation emerged as an expanding field of research in recent years, teacher motivation for professional development (PD) has remained predominantly neglected. This symposium presents four studies, which collectively, represent diverse research approaches, adopting different motivational theories (Achievement Goals Theory and Self-Determination Theory), different methodologies (quantitative and qualitative, including self-report questionnaires, interviews, and observations), and varying teacher PD settings (school-based professional learning communities, professional higher education teacher courses, a regional PD course, and a self-directed PD program). We will present recent findings and collectively discuss theoretical, methodological and practical emerging insights.
