Reimagining the Educator Pipeline: Strengths-Based Approaches to Studying Teacher Preparation, Recruitment, Diversity, and Retention

Mon, April 12, 11:10am to 12:40pm EDT (11:10am to 12:40pm EDT), Division K, Division K - Section 7 Paper and Symposium Sessions

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Accepting educational responsibility in the context of research on the educator pipeline necessitates representing practitioner perspectives, treating current and future teachers’ career decisions as complex and dynamic processes, and pushing back against harmful stereotypes about the students or schools they serve. We propose this symposium to rethink how we, as citizen-scholars, conceptualize the issues of teacher turnover, teacher diversity, and teacher shortages in order to imagine new ways of framing school staffing challenges and crafting asset-based solutions. We offer a nuanced critique of educator pipeline research and suggest a critical reframing of teacher recruitment and retention. We ask not what drives teachers out of teaching as a profession but what drives teachers in to teaching, and what keeps them there.
