Session Type: Symposium
Students vary in countless ways that can either foster or hinder their growth. Academic growth is a major topic within education policy circles. Who is showing growth? How much should they be showing? How can schools help students further develop as individuals? Recent policy initiatives have focused on evaluating teachers and schools based on growth. This symposium features five papers that approach the question of “who gets to learn?” from an angle that is often overlooked: academic achievement. Two papers consider how initial achievement interacts with other factors as predictors of growth over time, one paper investigates how that initial achievement has changed due to COVID-19, and two papers examine the variability in academic achievement present in typical US classrooms.
