Session Type: Symposium
This symposium brings together five papers exploring intersectionality, allyship and solidarity in community youth organizing spaces. From “inside” school district based youth councils to BIPOC grassroots organizations and racially integrated spaces, the presentation troubles the notion of whiteness, intersectionality and solidarity when rallying around social justice issues. A careful examination of intersectional strategies in grassroots organizing can elucidate lessons for schools on how to prepare young people for justice-oriented citizenship. In the era of Black Lives Matter, the symposium ultimately threads their cases of youth and community organizing to highlight an important need in American sociopolitical culture to bring long overdue social justice.
