Session Type: Symposium
This session highlights equity-focused, student-centered research conducted in K-20 virtual learning environments. Presentations start with a framework for humanizing online learning developed at the community college level, followed by a study conducted at the high school level on the collaborative design of a culturally relevant online citizenship course. The last two studies examine virtual learning with elementary school students, one in the context of a summer Freedom School and the other within a full inclusion model. Panelists will highlight strategies to humanize virtual learning. The session aims to equip educators, researchers, and policy-makers with information on how the expansion of K-20 virtual learning can be harnessed to reduce – instead of contributing to – educational opportunity gaps.
