Session Summary

Understanding and Supporting Young Children's Computational Thinking

Mon, April 12, 2:50 to 4:20pm EDT (2:50 to 4:20pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Early Education and Child Development Paper and Symposium Sessions 2

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Computational thinking (CT) is an important skill to foster in early childhood (EC). This symposium addresses these three interrelated issues: (1) understanding factors (e.g., teachers’ scaffolding, affordance of technology, demographics/environment) contributing to children’s CT learning (papers 1-3), (2) supporting CT learning by evaluating feasibility of programs that are designed for this purpose (papers 4 & 5), and (3) reviewing the state of research on CT in EC and charting future research directions (paper 6). Employing diverse research designs (e.g., case study, quantitative research, formative study/design-based research, systemic review), this set of papers collectively contributes to the emerging understanding of young children’s CT learning and explores important implications for both research and practice.
