Session Type: Symposium
Instructional laboratories are settings for collective observation, study, and analysis of teaching and learning. This interactive symposium includes a set of analyses of professional development inside of two different elementary mathematics instructional laboratories. The first paper examines teachers’ observations in the instructional laboratory compared to conventional classroom settings. The second paper examines structures that scaffold what participants attend to during and take up from observing the laboratory with particular attention to intervening on traditional ways of noticing Black children. The third paper examines the complexities of how participation impacted teachers’ discussion leading practice in their own classrooms. The fourth paper focuses on leveraging the laboratory to support the learning of preservice teachers.
