Session Type: Symposium
This session focuses on a community-based approach to educational leadership that acknowledges how historically marginalized families, students, and community members represent legitimate leaders in the fight for educational and racial equity and justice. We identify as community-based educational leadership researchers who seek to elevate the work of students and families who are often silenced or pushed out of decision-making processes in schools. This symposium’s objectives include the following: (1) highlight current research that extends and advances notions of community-based educational leadership; (2) surface key challenges for student and family leaders, facing issues of power and authority within traditional K-12 school settings; and (3) provide future directions for research and implications for educational leadership programs.
