Critical Perspectives on Using Simulations to Broaden Participation in Computer Science Through K–12 Teacher Education

Sat, April 10, 2:30 to 4:00pm EDT (2:30 to 4:00pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Technology as an Agent of Change in Teaching and Learning Paper and Symposium Sessions

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Over the 2019-2020 academic year 12 Teacher-Educators (fellows) implemented Teacher Moments to help prepare pre-service and in-service K-12 teachers integrate equitable computer science practices in the classroom using digital clinical simulations. The fellows authored and implemented simulated everyday difficult conversations with a common goal to broaden participation in computer science. In this session we present (1) a systematic description from researchers who designed Teacher Moments; (2) results from three studies where fellows used Teacher Moments to author, implement, and analyze data based on the use of digital clinical simulations in teacher education settings; and (3) an evaluation of strategies used to facilitate debrief and reflection among teacher-educators across the three studies.
