Session Type: Symposium
In this symposium, researchers will present five papers from a national qualitative study of principal leadership in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study draws on 120 interviews of public school principals from a range of school types and regional contexts across the US. The papers focus on: (1) principals as crisis managers, (2) principals’ role in supporting a culture of psychological safety, (3) the organizational conditions that support principal leadership and organizational learning, (4) the dynamics of shared leadership structures during crisis, and (5) principals’ sensemaking of external policy guidance. The findings have significant policy and practice implications for how to foster the conditions necessary to enable effective principal leadership even beyond periods of crisis.
