Session Type: Structured Poster Session
Biomaking, using biological materials to design and make a functional product, represents a paradigmatically different form of engagement with life sciences, a field where production is traditionally taken up to design experiments, models, or non-biologically-derived solutions. The recent development of accessible lab tools, community lab spaces, after school clubs, competitions, and readily implementable curriculum have made biomaking possible with K-12 groups. Still, we know little about the various learning affordances that increased access to biomaking has for K-12 education. This session aims to survey these ranging technologies, spaces, initiatives, and curricula in terms of their key affordances. We will also address critical challenges, opportunities, and future research directions for ensuring more equitable learning among K-12 biomakers.
