Session Type: Symposium
Transmediation, defined as “the translation of content from one sign system to another” (Suhor, 1981, p. 250) captures the workings of multimodality by calling attention to movement and transformation. Much early research on transmediation focused on pedagogies that invited students to draw their interpretations of a written text, and documented the generative potential of transmediation with little consideration of the complexities of school spaces. Treating classrooms as the background for multimodal meaning making may unintentionally keep in place the monomodal, monolingual, monocultural conceptions of literacy and literacy pedagogy that research on multimodality attempts to disrupt. Therefore, the aim of this symposium is to complicate the act of transmediation by considering the entanglement of sign-making and schooling.
