Session Type: Symposium
Despite over a decade of research and leadership focused on the advancement of equity, diversity, and social justice, little progress has been made concerning the education of children of color. The question remains “Why haven’t efforts to address racial and social inequality worked?” Responsively, the objective of this symposium is to present theoretical and conceptual treatments of race in education leadership that move beyond mainstream narratives of equity, diversity, and inclusion. This presentation of scholarship includes authors discussing their approaches to exploring what leadership for social justice looks like beyond the confines and limitations of the “White gaze” (Morrison, 1998). They offer intellectually and epistemologically sophisticated investigations and understandings of race and racism in education leadership research, theory, and practice.
