Virtual Lesson Study Model for Teacher Professional Development in Science

Abstract

Lesson study is becoming the preferred professional development for teachers to collaborate around student learning and share best practices. How can the lesson study model be utilized in a virtual Professional Learning format, providing teachers access to each other during pandemic school closures, across sites, districts, and states, so that distance is no longer an obstacle? This session will provide research from a mixed methods pilot study done in spring of 2020 with grade paired science teachers working together to plan, implement, revise, and reteach virtually using a distance learning lesson study model. Facilitators will review insights from this lesson study format and share opportunities for teachers, districts, and teacher education programs to utilize this virtual model for teacher development.
