Session Summary

Educational Responsibility for Students of Diverse Backgrounds and Social Identities in the United States, Japan, China, and Malaysia

Mon, April 12, 9:30 to 11:00am EDT (9:30 to 11:00am EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Research on the Education of Asian and Pacific Americans Paper and Symposium Sessions

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

To meet the challenges brought by the current political, economic, social, and environmental changes, educators who teach students of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds should acknowledge the importance of their roles and responsibilities for preparing students for academic success (Harper et al., 2020). This symposium compares and examines how education institutions in the U.S., Japan, China, and Malaysia embrace and face the diversity issues. This symposium advocates for multiple knowledge and diversity in education (including linguistics, cultures, races and social-economics), and calls for new theories and practices that better prepare education institutions for the diverse landscape of student populations, and that empower educators to ensure equity in the education of all students.
