Session Type: Symposium
This symposium examines approaches to helping preschool teachers improve children’s language development. A meta-analysis identifies specific teaching strategies that are effective and two papers that report results of experimental studies of methods that employ playful learning. One paper reports effects of teacher-guided play, focusing on children’s verbal engagement and teacher supports for children’s participation. The second paper reports results of a vocabulary intervention that uses music. The final paper reports results of a statewide early literacy intervention, with a focus on teacher induction methods. A researcher with extensive experience in early language interventions will discuss the papers.
