Session Type: Symposium
Recognizing and attending to emotion has typically not been within the purview of higher education, particularly in academic disciplines, where the intellectual, rational, and logical take center stage; this is so even though a robust body of research evidences the inextricable link between emotion and cognition (Immordino-Yang, Darling-Hammond, Krone, 2018). There is now a heightened urgency to integrate social-emotional learning (SEL) in higher education given the intersecting pandemics of COVID-19, racism and their ensuing adverse effects. In this symposium, we present four papers that explore emerging research on integrating and leveraging SEL for the purpose of advancing equity, well-being, and civic engagement in higher education, across a range of contexts.
