Session Summary

Exploring Culturally Relevant Research and Pedagogies to Inform Educational Practitioners

Sun, April 11, 2:30 to 4:00pm EDT (2:30 to 4:00pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Critical Educators for Social Justice Paper and Symposium Sessions

Session Type: Demonstration/Performance

Abstract

In this demonstration, the presenter details the exploration of “culturally relevant” research as it is understood by critical race theorists (CRT) to simulate a practice for educational practitioners. Using creative writing processes and tactics for courageous conversations, the presenter provides a design that will enable practitioners to interrogate racism and the systemic structures that exist in spaces on college campuses. As racism and its effects are not isolated occurrences, the use of culturally relevant research to inform our practices allows for the opportunity to combat a historically racially insensitive environment.
