Session Type: Structured Poster Session

Abstract

Research conducted in Western industrialized countries show the benefits of play-based learning for healthy child development. The topic becomes more complex in developing countries as less is known about the associated academic gains. This study investigates the relationship between play-based learning and student outcomes in a sample of 676 students and 70 of their corresponding head teachers in 70 classrooms and 9 villages within the One Village One Preschool project in rural China. We found a significant association between play-based learning and early mathematics outcomes; however, we did not find evidence of a relationship for language and emergent literacy outcomes. Our unexpected results contrast with Western literature and highlight the importance of context in play-based learning. We discussed implications for certain aspects of play-based early childhood programs in developing countries, including curriculum, resources, and teacher professional development.
