Session Summary

Difference, Social Engagement, and Responsibility: Perspectives From the Dewey-Soka Heritage

Fri, April 9, 4:10 to 5:40pm EDT (4:10 to 5:40pm EDT), Division B, Division B Section 3 Paper and Symposium Sessions

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This session brings together an international, interdisciplinary, and diverse group of established and emerging scholars to engage with the legacies of both John Dewey’s philosophy, and the tradition of value creating, or soka, education, represented in the work of Tsunesaburo Makiguchi, Josei Toda, and Daisaku Ikeda. The presentations address the question of educational responsibility grounded in the commitment that a creative response to enduring structures of injustice must include transformative engagements across difference. The outcome is an East-West ecology of thought and practice that embodies a vision of responsibility as joyful, compassionate, and critical. The symposium also articulates a philosophy of curriculum with the potential to revitalize and contribute to shaping the field of curriculum studies for the 21st century.
